How to get to Huilo Huilo? The Reserve is located in the XIV Region of Los Rios, in the South of Chile, South America. Part of the territory is in the townships of Panguipulli and Futrono, adjacent to the towns of Neltume, Puerto Fuy and the National Reserve Mocho-Choshuenco. The Reserve is bordered with the southern part of the Argentine province of Neuquén, being the Hua Hum frontier pass, near San Martin de los Andes the nearest access. From a geo-environmental perspective, Huilo Huilo is located within the Valdivian eco-region and the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Temperate Rainforests of the Austral Andes, in the northern limit of the Chilean Patagonia, which is why we call our forests the Patagonian Jungle, as opposed to the steppe Patagonia that is in the extreme south of Chile. BY CAR From north of Chile Take “Ruta 5” towards the south. After Temuco city, you must exit at Lanco (km 780) where the road joins the international CH highway 203 heading towards Panguipulli. Once in Panguipulli, continue on the international highway CH 203 heading to Choshuenco and bordering Lake Panguipulli. You will then arrive at the Puerto Fuy – Choshuenco crossroad. Continue along the international highway CH 203 heading to Puerto Fuy. When passing through the area of Llallalca, you will reach the Reserve and once in you will see several signs that will guide you to whichever may be your particular point(s) of interest. From Argentina If you are traveling from Argentina, in particular from the city of San Martin de los Andes, take national highway 48 up to the Hua Hum border passage. Once through border control you will arrive at the small town Puerto Pirehueico from where you can board the Hua Hum barge; the ferry can transport both people and vehicles. After traversing Lake Pirehueico, a trip that takes approximately 1.5 hours, you will arrive at Puerto Fuy, a town adjacent to the Reserve and from where signs will guide you to whatever is your chosen point of interest. For some of our programs, the Reserve has regular transfer options taking guests from the airports in Temuco, Puerto Montt and San Martin de los Andes (Argentina), as well as a few mid points between said airports and the Reserve. BY BUS There are several buses providing transport to the city of Panguipulli or Neltume that leave from Santiago, point of departure will depend on the bus company. Unesco declared the Patagonian Temperate Rainforest, which stretches over an area of 2,000,000 hectares, a World Biosphere Reserve in 2007. The Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve is located at the very centre of this rainforest.It consists of 100,000 hectares of luxuriant nature: a surprisingly diverse biology, glacial lakes, a multitude of rivers, the greatest diversity of fern species in continental Chile and a great number of endangered species. This area is very different to the better-known Patagonian pampas farther south. Huilo Huilo is part of a unique ecosystem in the Patagonian Rainforest, a region which is still relatively unexplored. Our engagement in scientific research and conservation in this area is internationally recognized. The Valdivian ecoregion, also known as the Valdivian Rainforest is a part of this region. It is made up of a narrow strip of forest, which stretches approximately 1.600 km. south, from 35º to 47º south. It is one the 25 most valued and endangered ecoregions on the planet. Recognized as a biodiversity hotspot (Myers et al., 2000), its biological importance is due to its high amount of endemic species, its great variety of habitats and its unique vegetation. Conservation research institutions have categorized these southern temperate virgin forests as globally important; few places on earth are so ecologically intact (Bryan et al., 1997). It is also a biogeographical island, divided from the other forest ecosystems in the Tertiary Period. It is home to extraordinary endemic species and a unique flora and fauna, which date back to the age of the super continent of Gondwana.The Valdivian ecoregion has been naturally isolated for thousands of years and, as a result, a unique vegetation and animal life with very particular characteristics developed. It has some of the richest and most extraordinary biodiversity in the world (Dinerstein et al., 1995, 2001).
